Post-screening comments by Daniel Dickinson
I was deeply moved by this story, in part because of my own triggers. I was barely able to keep from bawling during the post-screening discussion, and I was an emotional wreck for days. Even though this was a fictional story, like Ann Shin’s ‘The Last Exiles (a very different story, set in North Korea) it is based on real people and real events. The reality of some of the terrible things that happen in this world (including Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine) is one reason I find it very difficult to understand people who read gruesome horror and psychological thrillers and the like.
For me books (and movies too) are either entertainment (in which case I don’t want it to be too real) or about learning and understanding. I guess for other folks it is different, but it’s not who I am.
